Yves Edwards Says Next Opponent Can “Be Called Dwight Schrute For All I Care. As Long As He Can Fight”

By Kelsey Mowatt

Following his tightly contested, unanimous decision loss to Tony Ferguson in December, Yves Edwards was understandably eager to secure another high profile bout and resume the hunt for his 42nd pro win. At first, it appeared as though the accomplished vet was going to get his wish, as Edwards was granted a May 15th fight with the highly regarded Donald Cerrone. Not long after, however, the 35 year-old-fighter incurred an injury which pulled him from the UFC on FUEL 3 bout and left him out of action for a good part of 2012.

“I tore my bicep while I was training,” Edwards told FCF. “I thought I was going to be able to fight, but my doctor said that it would be a bad thing to fight without getting it repaired, and further, if I waited to get it repaired, there’s a time frame you have. Later there won’t be that option so I had to back out…They had to go in and re-attach the muscle where it had been torn.”

“Tentatively, right now the doctor is saying July is realistic,” Edwards added, while discussing a possible return date. “So, I’m just going to keep doing exactly what they say to do, and if everything keeps going my way, and I don’t do anything stupid, try to come back too early…I should be able to get back to training soon and fight by July.”

The near 60 fight vet isn’t accustomed to spending this much time on the sidelines, as Edwards managed to fight four times annually in 2010 and 2011.

“I don’t like it. That’s for sure,” Edwards noted. “I’m not one of those guys that like’s to take a bunch of time off to rest or whatever. I’m having too much fun. I absolutely love doing this. Even if I didn’t have to fight I’d still be training… Having to sit on my but has allowed me to sit back and think. That’s the part of it that has been good. It’s given me some time to evaluate some of the things I’ve been doing or not doing.”

The torn bicep not only sent Edwards to the sidelines for the first half of the year, but it cost him a bout with Cerrone, who is looking to rebound from the unanimous decision loss he suffered against Nate Diaz in December. Prior to the defeat, Cerrone had won six straight fights and was quickly ascending the lightweight rankings.

“I was excited about that,” Edwards said about Cerrone, who will now fight Jeremy Stephens on May 15th. “Donald’s one of those guys I have a lot of respect for. He’s fun to watch; he comes to fight, and he’s pretty good everywhere. He’s good on the ground and he’s great on his feet. It would have been an entertaining fight and he’s the kind of guy I want to fight. He’s in the upper echelon of the lightweight class and those are the guys I want to fight.”

With the Cerrone fight not happening, Edwards will have to wait and see who the UFC elects to match him up against next.

“I haven’t looked at any of that,” said Edwards while discussing possibilities for his return fight. “The thing about Donald, it’s not the name, I could care less about the name. He could be called Dwight Schrute for all I care. As long as he can fight; he comes to fight, and as long as he’s dangerous. That’s who I want to fight; as long as they’re that good.”

Of course, Edwards is coming off a fight with one of the lightweight division’s emerging stars in Ferguson, who has now won back-to-back bouts since winning the thirteenth season of “The Ultimate Fighter.”

“I haven’t watched it in some time now, but I felt it was a good fight,” Edwards said when asked to reflect on the decision loss. “I felt like I won the second and third rounds but I can also see why someone might think the other way around. It was a close fight and a tough fight.”

“I definitely didn’t lose three rounds,” Edwards furthered. “That’s ridiculous. I could see where judges might have scored two rounds for him and just one for me…Tony’s a tough guy. He came to fight and that guy has a chin. It’s ridiculous. I think he might be a Cyborg because I’ve kicked guys in the head before and they go down. That guy doesn’t slow down.”
