Zuffa Affirms Octagon Trademark Rightsin Settlement With San Jose Video Game Company

From Josh Hedges/Zuffa:

ZUFFA AFFIRMS OCTAGON TRADEMARK RIGHTS
IN SETTLEMENT WITH SAN JOSE VIDEO GAME COMPANY

LAS VEGAS, MAY 30, 2002…Zuffa LLC, the owner of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, today announced it achieved a favorable legal settlement this week with Bam! Entertainment, Inc., a San Jose, Calif.-based video game software company whose "Fire Pro Wrestling" game incorporated certain Ultimate Fighting Championship elements, which Zuffa asserted were infringing on its trademarks.

In the settlement agreement, Bam! acknowledged Zuffa’s ownership of Ultimate Fighting Championship trademark registrations and applications, including the validity of Zuffa’s trademark and trade dress rights in its octagon-shaped fighting ring. Bam! agreed to immediately discontinue depicting in any of its products an octagonal-shaped fighting ring in the video display screen and in its packaging, advertising and web site material.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship, headquartered in Las Vegas, Nev., is the world’s leading mixed martial arts sports company. It is owned and operated by Zuffa LLC and has partnerships with British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) in London, England; WOWOW, Inc. in Tokyo, Japan, and Globosat Programmadora LTDA in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It also has a partnership with Crave Entertainment, which creates and markets UFC video games on PlayStation, PlayStation2, X-Box and GameCube in retail outlets and on www.ufcvideogame.com. The Ultimate Fighting Championship is a sports event that brings together the world’s most talented mixed martial arts athletes from disciplines such as karate, jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, wrestling, boxing, sumo and others in a quest to become an ultimate fighting champion. THE WFA "PLAYAS" HAVE ARRIVED…

WORLD FIGHTING ALLIANCE
ANNOUNCES OFFICIAL LINE-UP
FOR JULY 5th LEVEL 2 CARD

LAS VEGAS (May 28, 2002) – Kicking off the holiday weekend with a bang, July 5th marks the return of mixed martial arts at its best. The World Fighting Alliance Championships: Level 2 promises to top its predecessor with even more electrifying sights and sounds to rock "The Joint" at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. Fans are once again invited to go "where the fight club meets the night club". At the heart of MMA’s most unique viewing experience are seven of the sport’s most anticipated match-ups, including the WFA’s very first title fight of the year. Spanning the globe for MMA’s hottest talent, the card boasts the return of a legend, the slick styling of an "international" ladies man and the power of a "hurricane". The Playas are ready to put it all on the line and fans won’t have to look to the skies to take in the fireworks.

In the main event, sparks will fly in the WFA’s first-ever Middleweight Championship. Kickboxer supreme Jermaine "Bamm-Bamm" Andre locks horns with New Mexican scrapper Joey "Poncho" Villasenor. Both men are devastating strikers known for never backing down. Expect a brutal face-off to see who can get the KO first.

In the co-main event, the legendary heavyweight brawler Kimo makes his return to the cage after a four year hiatus. Facing him will be the always tough Californian Gladiator Tim Lajcik. Will ring rust and the "Bohemian’s" wrestling and boxing prowess be too much for Kimo?
