UFC Champ Zhang Weili’s Not Interested in Rematch With Joanna Jedrzejczyk Next
By FCF Staff
Due to how thrilling and competitive Zhang Weili’s bout with Joanna Jedrzejczyk was at UFC 248, there’s been widespread calls for an immediate rematch. But, the strawweight champ says she’s looking at fighting someone else next.
Weili, who outscored Jedrzejczyk via split decision at the March 7th card, recently did an interview with ESPN via email (and through a translator). In response to a question about whether she wants to rematch the former champ next, Weili said this.
“I have no clue when my next fight would be yet, since everything is stuck by this COVID-19 pandemic. I would like to fight here in the U.S. again, since I have seen a massive number of Chinese and Asian people here motivated by my fight who will definitely cheer for me, and also U.S. has the biggest MMA fan base. I don’t want the rematch yet. I would like to give opportunities to other fighters in line.”
The 30-year-old Weili has gone 21-1 to date and the Chinese star holds a 5-0 record in the UFC.
