Demetrious Johnson Announces MMA Retirement
By FCF Staff
As many expected would be the case leading up to ONE Championship’s card in Denver on Friday, Demetrious Johnson announced during the event that he’s closing the book on his storied career.
The 38-year-old, who won and defended the flyweight titles for both ONE and the UFC multiple times, announced the news while speaking to the crowd from the cage (quote via MMA Fighting.com).
“Like I said last time when I came to Denver, Colo., I told you guys it was potentially my last fight, and I was not lying. I am done. I am done competing in mixed martial arts, and I want to thank you guys so much for giving me the opportunity.”
Johnson, who holds the UFC record for title defenses at 11, retires with a record of 25-4-1. The Washington State fighter last competed in May, 2023, when he recorded a unanimous decision win over Adriano Moraes to take their rubber match.
After exiting the UFC in 2018, when it was expected the promotion was going to shutter the flyweight division, Johnson proceeded to go 5-1 with ONE.
