It remains to be seen how much longer Jose Aldo continues to fight. But, it sounds like the legendary fighter’s days of competing at bantamweight could be over.

Aldo was scheduled to face Aiemann Zahabi in a bantamweight contest today at UFC 315. But, before Aldo was set to step on the scale, it was announced the fight had been changed to a featherweight battle.

Following the weigh-ins, which saw Aldo weigh-in at 143 pounds, the Brazilian star reported he’s likely done fighting at bantamweight. According to a report from MMA Fighting, the 38-year-old relayed the following, during the Brazilian weigh-in broadcast.

“I was talking to ‘Dede’ (Andre Pederneiras) about it. I’ve forced too much on this weight. I’ve always weighed around [158 pounds], so I was never as heavy as these featherweights are today, cutting from [176] or higher. So there was no problem for me making [135], but I think I’ve reached a point in my career that it makes no sense to keep forcing [the cut] and taking fight after fight. I love fighting; this is what I like doing, but it’s best to do it at featherweight. But first I gotta think about tomorrow, on Zahabi. I have to go in there and win, and then we’ll see where I go.”

Aldo (32-9), who is coming off a split decision loss to Mario Bautista in October, has fought at bantamweight since 2019. The former featherweight champ has gone 4-4 during that time.

Zahabi (12-2), meanwhile, is coming off a unanimous decision win over Pedro Munhoz in November, and has won five in a row.

UFC 315 is taking place in Montreal, Quebec.
