Alex Pereira Focused on Light-Heavyweight Title Reign For Now
By FCF Staff
Over the preceding months, there’s been no shortage of talk about Alex Pereira challenging for yet another title. But, it looks like the UFC’s light-heavyweight champ doesn’t plan to change divisions anytime soon.
Pereira has made headlines in recent weeks by stating he’d be willing to drop down to middleweight to challenge champion Dricus Du Plessis. The decorated fighter has also expressed an interest in moving up to heavyweight.
But, as Pereira prepares to fight Khalil Rountree at UFC 307 this Saturday, the former middleweight champ was asked if he might make a move following this weekend’s bout. Pereira confirmed he plans to stay at 205 for now (quotes via MMA Fighting.com).
“I would choose to defend my belt,” Pereira said. “Because it takes a planned work to cut down in weight, and it takes planned work to move up as well, but it’s perfect for this division.”
And, when asked about the possibility of fighting heavyweight champ Jon Jones down the line, Pereira noted it sounds like “Bones” doesn’t plan to fight beyond UFC 309.
“He’s made it pretty clear that he’s only doing one more fight and retiring,” Pereira said. “And I’m not even part of this division, so I would be far from doing that fight. And I have an open mind, so training and learning from him is something I would absolutely do.”
Jones is scheduled to fight former champ, Stipe Miocic, at the November 16th card.
UFC 307, meanwhile, is taking place in Salt Lake City, Utah. It will mark the first time Pereira (11-2) has fought since he stopped Jiří Procházka in June.
Rountree (15-5) hasn’t fought since December, 2023, when he recorded a stoppage win over Anthony Smith.
