Light heavyweight Muay Thai superstar Simon Marcus (left) returns to the ring at Muay Thai in America
By Greg Boasberg
Muay Thai in America is back December 1st, 2012 at Raliegh Studios in Playa Del Rey, CA. The event entitled “In Honor of the King of Thailand’s 85th Birthday” will feature 18 of some of the best Thai Boxers from around the globe.
Muay Thai in America’s last promotion took place April 3rd, 2010 at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. The event had featured long time fixtures in the California Muay Thai Community Romie Adanza, Miriam Nakamoto, & Malaipet Sasiprapa. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the opportunity to attend the event, but from what I heard from reputable sources, it was one of the most well produced Muay Thai Events they had ever been to. An elegant, red carpet affair which paid a strong emphasis on perserving the traditional aspects on the brutal, yet beautiful sport of Muay Thai.
“In Honor of the Kings Birthday” will feature several World Class Thai Boxers. Undefeated Muay Thai Star Simon Marcus, from Siam No.1 will be competing against Sadibou Sy at 183 lbs. Marcus is considered one of the best 175 lbs Thai Boxers in the world. This year he has defeated American Standout Joe Schilling twice in Las Vegas, & fought two of China’s top light heavyweights back to back in Beijing in April. Muay Thai fans have been eagerly awaiting the matchup between Simon Marcus & WBC World Light Heavyweight Champion Artem Levin, a match that many feel would finally prove, who the top Light Heavy Weight Thai Boxer in the world is.
Julie Kitchen, otherwise known as the “Queen of Muay Thai” has been a fixture in Women’s Muay Thai for quite sometime now. She is looking to rebound from her recent decision loss to American Standout Miriam Nakamoto. Julie Kitchen will be taking on Amanda Kelly, a fellow Brit at 135 lbs.
Thailand’s Terminator Rungravee Sasiprapa will be going up against Damien Trainor in a rematch. Damien is looking to avenge his decision loss to Rungravee in 2011. Rungravee, comes out of respected Sasiprapa Gym in Bangkok, and is known for his aggressive style and his devastating leg kicks. To “Rungravee” something, has become a term to tear something up, such as, I’m going to go Rungravee that buffet. You can expect nothing less than an exciting fight when Rungravee is in the house.
All nine of the match-ups on this show could be a main event on any Muay Thai Production. The tentative match-ups are as follows.
- Simon Marcus (Canada) vs. Sadibou Sy (Sweden) 183lbs
- Rungravee Sasiprapa (Thailand) vs. Damien Trainor (England) 125lbs
- Amanda Kelly (England) vs Julie Kitchens (England) 135lbs
- Christophe Pruvost (switzerland) vs. Chike Lindsay (USA) 154lbs
- Greg Wooten (England) vs. Matt Embree (Canada) 140lbs
- Andy Howson (England) vs. Boom Wattanaya (Thailand/Canada) 125lbs
- Medhi Baghdad (France/USA) vs. Joe Valtellini (Canada) 160lbs
- Salah Abdelsalam (Libya) vs. Justin Greskiewicz (USA) 147lbs
This is the first international Muay Thai Pay-Per-View fighting event in the history of the United States, to be broadcast live on both DirecTV, InDemand and around the world. This international Muay Thai fighting event will be produced in both 2D and stunning 3D.
