From Mike "The Shooter’s Shooter" McNeil: ATTENTION: SUBMISSION GRAPPLERS ANNOUNCING THE It is with great pleasure that the Toronto Showdown Committee announces the inaugural Toronto Showdown Grappling Open. Thanks to the sanctioning of the Canadian Jiu-Jitsu Association, the Toronto Showdown is a legitimate martial arts sporting event in the Province of Ontario. We have secured the services of Centennial College to host this great event, which is sure to be the largest grappling event to ever hit the Toronto Market. On June 8th, 2002, the 2002 Toronto Showdown Grappling Open will host divisions in ‘gi’ and ‘no-gi’ submission grappling serving over 14 weight classes. This is the first event of it’s kind in Ontario to fully adopt the rules set forth by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation and the Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling Championships. Straight from Brazil our confirmed Guest Referees for this years Toronto Showdown include Professor Sylvio Behring (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu 5th Degree Black Belt), Jose Mario "Esfiha" (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt and Abu Dhabi Veteran), Rodrigo Munduruca (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt) and Pedro Albuquerque (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Brown Belt and Instructor). These gentlemen have dedicated their lives to the martial arts and their experience can only help the competitors, event organizers, and the growth of the sport in Canada. The Toronto Showdown "Superfights" will feature both established, and up and coming athletes, facing off with a unique ‘Ontario Versus Quebec’ theme. In addition, representatives of the Universal Combat Challenge (Canada’s premiere Mixed Martial Arts event) will be on hand with the hopes of discovering future Mixed Martial Arts stars. Competitors visiting from out of town can stay at the Centennial Residence & Conference Centre conveniently located at Markham Road and Highway 401, just minutes away from the Toronto Showdown venue. For further information, please visit the official Toronto Showdown web site at www.torontoshowdown.com. The Toronto Showdown is dedicated to the recognition of submission grappling in Canada; be it Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Sambo, Judo, or any submission arts.
