Bellator 121: Pat Curran-Patricio Freire II Booked, “Pitbull” Says Champ Has “Started to Get Cocky”

By FCF Staff

Although Patricio “Pitbull” Freire wanted it sooner, the highly regarded fighter finally has a date for his rematch with Bellator featherweight champ, Pat Curran. The promotion has announced that the fight will headline its June 6th, Bellator 121 card, which will be hosted by the Winstar World Casino in Thackerville, Oklahoma.

“Pitbull” (21-2) locked up another title shot last November, by stopping Justin Wilcox in the first round of that tourney’s finale. After Curran (20-5) lost the title to Daniel Straus that same month, however, Bellator decided to go with Curran-Straus III. Curran reclaimed the belt in March with a fifth round, rear-naked-choke, in what was one of the year’s more memorable bouts to date.

Freire challenged Curran for the belt in January, 2013, but lost by split decision. Since then the Team Nogueira member has won four straight bouts.

“I’ve been wanting this rematch with Curran for a long time, and it’s finally here,” Freire said in a press release from the promotion. “I won that first fight, and I should be Bellator Featherweight Champion right now. This time, I’m not going to let it go to the judges. Curran has started to get cocky and he’s disrespecting me. He has no idea what I’ve been through to get to the title. I’m going to put a brake on his tongue on June 6th.”

“Pitbull has been running his mouth a lot lately and everyone is sick of hearing it,” Curran said. “I’m ready to shut him up for good. I’m an even better fighter now than I was the first time we fought and I’ll show you Pitbull a true champion fights on June 6th.”

No other bouts have been confirmed yet for Bellator 121.
