Bellator’s Bjorn Rebney Announces Signing of UFC Vet Lavar Johnson

Johnson pursuing Lolohea Mahe

By FCF Staff

Not long after Bellator announced that former UFC heavyweight Cheick Kongo would compete in its upcoming tournament, the promotion’s CEO Bjorn Rebney has announced they’ve signed Lavar Johnson.

Rebney confirmed the UFC vet’s signing while talking on the SLO Late Show, and also said that Johnson is expected to compete in the Season Nine tourney.

Johnson (17-7) moved to the UFC after going 3-2 with Strikeforce, and after stopping Pat Barry and Joey Beltran, the 36 year-old was defeated by Stefan Struve and Brendan Schaub. Following his loss to Schaub at UFC 157, Johnson tested positive for an elevated testosterone-to-epitestosterone (T/E) ratio and was also cut by the UFC.

No information as to who Johnson might fight in his Bellator debut was provided.

Bellator’s Season Nine gets underway tomorrow night in Uncasville, Connecticut and will see middleweight champion Alexander Shlemenko take on Brett Cooper.

In 2013, Bellator has signed several UFC vets, including “Rampage” Jackson, Tito Ortiz, John Alessio and Diego Nunes, in addition to Kongo and Johnson.
