Israel Adesanya is booked to fight Nassourdine Imavov next, and according to potential opponent, Caio Borralho, the former middleweight champ chose wisely.

Recently, the UFC announced that Adesanya will battle Imavov at the promotion’s February 1st card in Saudi Arabia. The fight will be Adesanya’s first, since he was submitted by the reigning champ, Dricus Du Plessis, at UFC 305 in August.

Since then, Borralho (17-1) appeared on the “Overdogs Podcast”, and the rising middleweight reported he was also in the running to face Adesanya (22-4) (quotes via MMA Junkie.com).

“I think the UFC offered Izzy two fights: me or Imavov,” Borralho said. “And then, he suddenly posted a clip studying Imavov’s tape, and I was like, ‘Come on, bro.’ I sent a message to Izzy, and was like, ‘Bro, why you choosing that?’

“He was like, ‘Bro, we’re going to fight next year. We’re going to dance next year for the belt.’ It’s OK, I respect you if you choose that. I think he chose right. I think Imavov is a better fight for him, and I think Izzy is the favorite in this fight.”

Borralho is coming off a unanimous decision win over Jared Cannonier in August and has won all 7 of his UFC bouts to date. Currently, the 31-year-old Brazilian fighter is ranked #6 in the UFC’s middleweight division.

Imavov (15-4), meanwhile, recorded a unanimous decision win over Brendan Allen in his last outing, which took place in September. The France-based fighter is ranked #5 and Adesanya is ranked #2.
