Chad Mendes Wants Shot At UFC Featherweight Champ Jose Aldo

Chad Mendes

By Timothy J. Gilbert

Chad Mendes has fought in 15 professional matches spanning five years and four organizations. But, through all of this, there has been only one man who was ever skilled enough to defeat him. That man is UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo.

And that is precisely who Mendes has his eyes on.

“I’ve always wanted to be the one to beat Aldo,” said Mendes in an interview with MMAJunkie.com.

Aldo (22-1) is undefeated in his last 15 matches and has not lost since getting submitted by Luciano Azevedo in 2005. The featherweight champion is scheduled to defend his belt against Anthony Pettis at UFC 163 in August.

The outcome of that fight may have an outstanding impact on Mendes’ future.

A Pettis victory would eliminate Aldo, while possibly leaving room for a rematch, events that would bump Mendes out of tile contention even longer. That is, if the champion doesn’t move up a weight class before then.

“I would definitely understand if he’s needing to move up, but I want to be the one to take that title from him,” Mendes said. “I know he cuts a ton of weight – the guy is huge for 145 pounds, and that’s always going to be draining on the body. You can only do that for so long, and the older you get, the harder it’s going to be.”

Mendes (14-1) is coming off of three straight first round knockouts of Darrin Elkins, Yaotzin Meza and Cody McKenzie, all within one year. He is currently considered the top contender in many featherweight power rankings.
