Rodrigo Gracie By Tom DeFazio Recently, we did a profile of some of the guys on the Renzo Gracie Fight Team. Here’s the piece we did on Rodrigo Gracie from last month’s issue of Full Contact Fighter…
FCF: How long have you been training with Renzo? Rodrigo Gracie: About 5 years. FCF: You and Matt Serra just opened another school out on Long Island, and you teach here in Manhattan as well, you have a lot of talented guys on the team… FCF: You’re going back to Abu Dhabi this year? FCF: You stayed out last year due to knee problems, how is the knee doing? FCF: What weight division will you be going into? FCF: Before that, you have a Mixed Martial Arts match. Who will you be fighting? FCF: You been doing a lot of stand-up work for the match? FCF: Is this your first pro MMA match? FCF: You plan to make a career out of it? FCF: You also have a grappling super-fight match coming up…? FCF: The last time you fought at NAGA, you competed in a 4-man super-fight tourney. How did that go? FCF: Okay, thanks. Good luck in your fights. Rodrigo went on to win his inaugural mixed martial arts match in fast and impressive fashion. I got a hold of "The Highlander" again to get his thoughts on the match, and also to find out exactly how earned that unique nickname. FCF: How did it feel to fight a Mixed Martial Arts match as opposed to grappling-only? FCF: Were you nervous going in? FCF: So you were not nervous after that?
FCF: He went to sleep very quickly. FCF: Thirty-four seconds, quick fight. How did you feel afterwards? FCF: What was your strategy going in? You’ve been training in a lot of stand-up stuff, were you planning on going in and banging with him? FCF: Now that you’ve entered the world of MMA, do you have any plans for future fights? FCF: Has Pride made an offer? FCF: So the next thing for you after Abu Dhabi is Pride? FCF: Well, I want to wish you luck in your fights. One more thing before you go…How did you get the nickname "Highlander?" Does it have anything to do with your Scottish heritage? RG: [Laughs] The Highlander thing was because back in Brazil, I went out with this really, really ugly girl; you know? [laughing] So, everybody started to say, "Man! How could you?" So I started saying, "Dude, I’m a Highlander…’There can be only one!’" [laughing harder] That’s how it started…’cause the chick was so ugly, back then I didn’t care. So when I was passing by with the ugly chick, I was even smiling at them. So afterwards, everybody was talking…after that I was known as "The Highlander," because there can be only one person who will go out with an ugly chick like this. Here’s a message to all the guys out there reading this, you have to get ugly girls once in a while, ’cause if you don’t get ugly girls, you don’t go to heaven. You gotta do some…how you do you say it? Charity work…[laughing] you have to do some charity work so God can see it and you can get into heaven. |
