Dana White: “Massive Hurdles” Currently in Front of Israel Adesanya vs. Jon Jones
By FCF Staff
For months now, there’s been talk about Israel Adesanya and Jon Jones fighting, and both fighters have called for the match-up at various junctures. But, as 2021 gets underway, UFC President Dana White is warning fans to not get their hopes too much, yet, regarding the super fight.
Adesanya and Jones have been feuding through interviews and social media for well over a year now. The middleweight champion Adesanya has repeatedly said he wants to fight Jones at some point, while the latter called for the match-up last year.
But, as it stands right now, Jones is planning to make a run at heavyweight and has been bulking up to do so. While Adesanya is scheduled to fight light heavyweight champ, Jan Blachowicz, on March 6th.
As a result, while talking to ESPN recently, White had this to say about the possibility of Adesanya and Jones fighting (quotes via MMA Junkie).
“With Jon Jones moving up to heavyweight, I don’t know. Then there’s all the talk between him and Adesanya. I don’t want to get too excited,” White said. “Adesanya still has to fight (UFC light heavyweight champion) Jan (Blachowicz), and Jones is at heavyweight.
“There’s so many massive hurdles that these guys need to get over, so don’t get excited thinking about Jon Jones vs. Israel Adesanya.”
A timeline for Jones’ heavyweight debut has not been determined yet. The expectation is, however, that he’ll be booked to face the winner of Stipe Miocic – Francis Ngannou 2, which has not been scheduled yet.
