Dana White Says Justin Gaethje “Fits Very Well” in Lightweight Title Picture
By FCF Staff
Recently Justin Gaethje questioned whether he’s angered UFC brass, while discussing the fact his next bout has yet to be booked. But, UFC President Dana White insists the promotion hasn’t forgotten about the former interim champ.
Gaethje (22-3) hasn’t been scheduled for his next fight, following his submission loss to the now retired, Khabib Nurmagomedov in October. There was speculation the UFC was looking at having Gaethje fight Michael Chandler. But, recently it was announced the latter will face Charles Oliveira for the vacant lightweight title, May 15th. Tony Ferguson is also set to fight Beneil Dariush at that event.
Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor, meanwhile, are expected to fight for a third time this summer. As a result, it’s not clear who Gaethje could face next.
But, during the pre-fight presser for UFC 260, White had this to say about Gaethje (quotes via MMA Junkie).
“He fits very well in all this,” White said. “After this plays out, he’s probably next in line. It depends on what happens with Dustin and Conor.”
“You know how that is. Timing is everything when these fights happen, how much damage did the guy who won take and what kind of personal sh*t does he have going on,” White said. “You know all that stuff factors into when the next fight would be, but Justin Gaethje couldn’t be in a better position.”
The 32-year-old Gaethje is currently ranked #2 in the UFC’s lightweight division.
