Dana White Says UFC Has Been Considering Axing FW Division “For Years”

Dana White

By FCF Staff

Following Demetrious Johnson’s claim that Dana White has threatened to shut down the flyweight division, if he doesn’t accept a bout with TJ Dillashaw, the UFC President’s denied that’s the case. But, while doing so, White’s confirmed that the UFC has been considering axing the division after all.

Johnson made the allegation recently, while relaying grievances he has with the UFC, as a result of the promotion’s desire to have him fight Dillashaw.

TMZ Sports recently caught up with White, and the latter denied that the UFC has been mistreating the flyweight champ. In terms Johnson’s comments about shutting down the flyweight division, however, White said this:

“We’ve been talking about shutting down the flyweight division for about three years. I think that’s what he was saying. He knows that. He knows that we’ve talked about, doing away with that division has nothing to do with Demetrious…and never once did I threaten him to shut down the division…That’s not what happened. I told him that we’ve talking about shutting down the division for years…”

White also said that a Johnson led, pay-per-view was the “lowest selling” PPV card in the company’s history. In addition, White argued that Conor McGregor, and not Demetrious Johnson, is the best pound-for-pound fighter in MMA.
