Daniel Cormier Confirmed as Replacement for Alistair Overeem

As expected, rising heavyweight Daniel Cormier will fight Antonio Silva in the semi-finals of Strikeforce’s heavyweight grand-prix on September 10th. While speaking on a teleconference today to promote Strikeforce’s upcoming “Fedor vs. Henderson” event, Vice President Scott Coker confirmed that Cormier is replacing Alistair Overeem on the card.
Recently it was announced that Overeem would no longer compete in the semi-finals as scheduled, reportedly due to a toe injury which would prevent the heavyweight champion from competing on September 10th.
When asked why postponing the tourney semi-finals until October wasn’t an option, Coke reiterated recent statements that have been made by UFC President Dana White.
“September 10th was the TV date that we were allotted for the tournament,” Coker said. “That’s the date we have to go on. Unfortunately Alistair has an injury and he can’t compete.”
The upcoming event will be broadcast on Showtime and will see Sergei Kharitonov battle Josh Barnett in the other semi-final bout.
