It looks like Kelvin Gastelum is having issues cutting down to welterweight again, as Daniel Rodriguez is reporting he’s agreed to fight the veteran at middleweight on Saturday.

The two were scheduled to fight in a welterweight contest at the UFC’s, June 22nd card in Saudi Arabia. But, recently Gastelum reported that he’s had a problematic training camp and that as a result, he’s been having issues cutting weight.

Since then, Rodriguez told MMA Junkie that the UFC contacted him about fighting Gastelum at middleweight, instead of welterweight.

“Actually, the matchmakers reached out and I tried to get it to a catchweight, but he must be having such a bad fight camp that he can’t even make 180,” Rodriguez said. “I’m currently 179 pounds, so I have to put weight back on.

“It’s been 13 weeks since I found out about this fight. I’m sure he has, too. So the fact that he’s saying that he’s having a bad fight camp (for the weight cut) makes no sense. I feel like it’s lack of discipline. I don’t know if he’s having a bad fight camp or he’s just being lazy and doesn’t want to make the weight.”

Due to repeated issues making 170 pounds in the past, Gastelum (17-9) fought at middleweight for several years, before returning to welterweight in 2023. In his last outing this past December, Gastelum was submitted by Sean Brady.  Gastelum is 2-3 in his last 5 fights.

Rodriguez (17-4), meanwhile, hasn’t fought since May, 2023, when he was stopped by Ian Machado Garry. Rodriguez has gone 3-2 in his last 5 contests.
