Dominick Reyes Reflects on Snapped Losing Streak: “I Never Gave up”
By FCF Staff
Dominick Reyes recently recorded a victory for the first time since 2019. But, despite his well-documented struggles in recent years, the former, light heavyweight challenger never lost faith in his abilities.
Reyes faced Dustin Jacoby at UFC Louisville last weekend, and stopped the noted kickboxer in round one. The win snapped a four-fight losing skid for Reyes, which began in February, 2020, when he dropped a controversial decision loss to then champion, Jon Jones.
Following last Saturday’s win, Reyes appeared on “The MMA Hour”. While reflecting on his losing streak, the 34-year-old reported he always had confidence he would return to the win column (quotes via MMA Fighting.com).
“I just stayed the course,” Reyes said. “I never gave up on myself. I just kept fighting, kept training, kept getting better. Here I am back in the winner’s circle, two-year layoff from fighting and it’s like I never left.”
On account of his recent win, Reyes has moved up two spots in the UFC’s light heavyweight ranks and is now #13. But, the California fighter isn’t talking about another title shot run yet.
“I’m not even thinking about that,” Reyes said of the title. “I’m just enjoying this, and then the next fight and then the next fight, and then we’ll see. It’s one of those things where, there’s no point in reaching to that right now.
“That’s always the goal, to be champ. Always the goal to be a champ. I’m not here to just fight and that’s it. I’m here to be champ, yes, but I’m not there yet. Let’s continue to win, continue to put it together and then we’ll get there.”
With the victory, Reyes moved his overall record to 13-4. During his losing streak, he also incurred losses to former champs Jan Blachowicz and Jiri Prochazka.
