Fighter Dies in Unregulated MMA Event in Michigan

By Timothy J. Gilbert

After competing in his very first mixed martial arts event, Canadian resident Felix Pablo Elochukwu, has died. The 35 year old competitor was fighting at an unregulated amateur event in Port Huron, Michigan.

No cause of death has been determined, although an autopsy is scheduled for Sunday to establish a cause, according to MMAJunkie.com.

Elochukwu spent most of his life in Nigeria before moving to Ontario in 2012. The heavyweight competitor was best known for his success on the local grappling circuit.

The fight began normally, with the first two rounds consisting of mostly grappling and ground work. Going into the third round both fighters appeared normal, if not for a slightly elevated level of fatigue.

During the third and final round Elochukwu was mounted and ate several shots before the referee ended the match. Elochukwu was coherent enough to stand through the announcement of the official decision, but his condition soon changed.

Once seated, Elochukwu proceeded to falter and fall off his chair, before paramedics rushed to his side. Elochukwu was successfully revived before being taken to a hospital. Not long after, it was reported that he  had died.

Neither Elochukwu nor his opponent were required to undergo prefight medical examinations, according to Sportsnet.ca

Amateur MMA bouts are unregulated under Michigan laws; meaning the safety and livelihood of the competitors are left for the promotion to regulate, although Michigan political leaders are in the process of working out legislation.
