Fighters From 8 States Eye National Titles
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — A field of 20 fighters, representing 8 states, will battle it out here Saturday at the Eagles Club. At stake are five weight division titles and the professional contracts that go along with them. The 2000 U.S. Mixed Martial Arts National Championships will start at 7 p.m. at the Eagles Club, located at 2700 E. Ash St. in Springfield. Competing for the amateur titles are winners in four Trials events held last year in Atlanta, Clinton, Iowa, Davenport, Iowa, and Springfield. There will be 4-man tournaments at 150, 170, 190, 210 and heavyweight. Winners will receive pro deals with Extreme Challenge, Super Brawl and the USWF. Past National qualifiers include UFC veterans Eugene Jackson, Mark Hughes and Ben Earwood. Headlining this year’s event is a pro fight between up-and-coming fighters Mark Hughes of Hillsboro, Ill., and Joe Geromiller of St. Louis.
