Trigg (top) vs. Miller |
(December 1, 2006 – Honolulu, HI) Icon Sport: Unstoppable featured fighters that claimed to be … well … unstoppable. Fortunately for the fans, but unfortunately for a few fighters, many of these fighters proved to be very stoppable. The event had a good mix of debuting fighters, fighters on the rise and the cream of the crop, with every fighter looking to finish their opponent. Lorenzo Moreno started strong, but Sadhu Bott finished strong in their three-round war. Marshall Harvest and Kyle Miyahana had a great technical battle on the ground coupled with some wild exchanges. But in the end, Harvest’s composure and control throughout the bout earned him the unanimous decision. Mark Oshiro stopped Icon Sport rising start Tyson Nam cold, but knocking him out to capture the Hawaii State Flyweight title and put him at the top of the 135lbs mountain. The only one to defeat Oshiro was former champ, Ed Newalu. Can you say rematch? Sydney Silva proved that he can do no wrong by out striking Jay Jack, then locking in a triangle to submit the visitor and capture the North American Welterweight title. The main event saw a former top 5 fighter rise to greatness. Frank Trigg showed improved striking skills and capitalized on some errors in Mayhem’s strategy. Much like his victory over the similarly styled Renato Verissimo, Frank Trigg defended take downs, neutralized positions that would have led to submissions and pounded the ground technician with punches and soccer kicks to the head. Miller did get his chance to end the fight by having Trigg’s back, but Trigg defended well and scrambled back to his feet after a couple of belly to back suplexes. Miller, who is known for taking a tremendous amount of punishment during his fights, finally found his limit and was handed his first loss on Hawaiian soil.
