Freddie Roach: Georges St-Pierre Believes Conor McGregor Might be Moving to 155 Too Soon
By FCF Staff
Several observers have argued Conor McGregor might be better off remaining at 145 for now, and according to Freddie Roach, Georges St-Pierre is one of them.
McGregor will fight the lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 196 on March 5th, after securing the featherweight belt in December, by knocking out Jose Aldo. McGregor has competed at lightweight in the past, and since he arrived in the UFC, he said he planned to return to 155.
Recently Fight Hub TV caught up with Roach, who has worked with St-Pierre in recent years. When asked to weigh-in on McGregor, the renowned boxing trainer said this (quote via Bloody Elbow.com):
“Obviously he’s fun to watch. He talks a good game, he backs it up so far, he’s moving up a weight class. I was just with Georges St-Pierre recently, this week, up in Montreal. Georges might be thinking that he maybe shouldn’t be moving up in weight so quickly, because he says it might be a different outcome with the bigger weight class, of course. But, so far he’s proven everyone wrong and he’s knocking everyone out. He’s fun to watch. I like him.”
St-Pierre, meanwhile, has yet to confirm whether he will step into the Octagon again. The former welterweight champ hasn’t fought now since 2013.
