Full Contact Fighter’s “The Daily Takedown:” Robbie Lawler On Brink of Major Comeback
By Joshua Molina
Former Strikeforce fighter Robbie Lawler returns to the cage Saturday night to battle Bobby Voelker at UFC on Fox 8.
Not too long ago Lawler was on the verge of being irrelevant. He had lost four out of his last six fights in Strikeforce when he walked into the cage to fight Josh Koscheck in his return to the UFC.
Lawler did what no one thought he could — knockout the tough Koscheck. He resparked his career, and now, remarkably, is relevant again.
This Saturday we’ll find out if his victory over Koscheck was the sign of a legit comeback, or just a fluke victory over another aging star.
Lawler is somewhat of a throwback MMA fighter. He’s not the super well-rounded Jiu-Jitsu black belt, star wrestler that increasingly steps inside the cage these days.
Lawler is a knockout artist. He would knock Jon Jones into the middle of next week if he could hit him in the face. He’s one of the hardest hitting punchers in the business.
Voelker will be a tough challenge for Lawler, but Lawler is used to fighting at middleweight, and will have a strength advantage against Voelker at welterweight.
If Lawler can score another stunning KO, we might see him emerge as a title contender one last time.
