Full Contact Fighter’s “The Daily Takedown:” Welcome to Planet Earth, Dana
By Joshua Molina
Dana White, welcome to Planet Earth.
UFC boss Dana White said something nice–about Fedor Emelianenko.
White admitted Fedor was one of the best heavyweights in the world on a recent conference call.
This is after years of berating Fedor, calling him overrated and a “fraud.”
Here’s what White said:
“Do I think that Fedor is one of the greatest heavyweights ever? Yeah, he’s one of the greatest heavyweights ever. I’ll give you that. Is he one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all-time? You’re out of your minds.”
It’s a start.
Let’s overlook the fact that you cannot really be one of the best heavyweights of all time and not be one of the best mixed martial artists of all time.
Unless you don’t thing heavyweights are among the best in the world.
We know that’s not the case. Even in the promotion of the Junior Dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez fight, the UFC is billing the winner as the baddest man on the planet.
It doesn’t make sense to attempt to understand White’s logic. The big news is that White acknowledged that a star not created in the UFC, was one of the best.
The other lesson to be learned here is that unless it comes from the UFC’s legal department, fans and the media should never take anything White says too seriously.
There’s a good chance he will eventually contradict himself.
White is a great businessman. And a great promoter. But he’s not an expert on MMA talent.
He has shown over and over that he lets emotion overtake his logic and judgment.
He’s a business savvy hothead with power. So the next time he blasts a fighter for any reason, just laugh and don’t take it too seriously.
He often doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
White finally believes Fedor was one of the best.
Welcome to Planet Earth, Dana. It’s about time.
