If Georges St-Pierre defeats Michael Bisping in November, and lays claim to the UFC’s middleweight title, he will have to defend it at least once.

Recently the former welterweight champ reported that he’s signed a bout agreement to face Bisping at UFC 217, November 4th in Madison Square Garden. Since talk of  a Bisping – GSP bout first surfaced earlier this year, it wasn’t clear if the latter would remain at 185, provided he won the title.

But, during the latest “MMA Hour”, St-Pierre reported the following (quote via MMA Fighting):

“I have to defend my title,” St-Pierre said. “It’s written in my contract. I have to defend my title if I win.”

“That wasn’t my initial plan, but I understand the UFC’s point of view,” St-Pierre added. “They want to protect their titles. They don’t want to delay the defense of their titles, because they don’t want to make people wait.”

Robert Whittaker won the interim middleweight title this past July, by earning a decision win over Yoel Romero. The surging fighter is currently sidelined, however, with a knee injury.
