Henderson, Lindland On Collision Course
Henderson, Lindland on Collision Course Performance Quest Teammates Could Face Off at Greco-Roman World Team Trials By Aaron Crecy

CINCINNATI–When Matt Lindland defeated Ricardo Almeida in UFC 31, Performance Quest teammate Dan Henderson was in the corner offering advice and encouragement. But when the 85-kilo (187.25 lbs.) weight class is contested at the 2001 U.S. Greco-Roman World Team Trials, there is a strong likelihood that Henderson will be on the receiving end of the top-seeded Lindland’s staredown. The 2000 Olympic silver medallist at 76 kilos (163.5 lbs.), Lindland claimed an automatic berth into Sunday’s best-of-three finals when he won the 2001 US Open Championships in April despite moving up a weight class. So, while Lindland and the other reigning champions watch from the stands in Cintas Arena on the campus of Xavier University, the top challengers are battling for the right to face them. As the first day of the Challenge Tournament came to a close, Henderson-who posted decisive victories in Pride 13 and 14-was just one win away from a Sunday morning meeting with Lindland. In his opening bout, the two time Olympian recorded the first of two consecutive technical falls, routing James Meyer 11-0. In the Challenge Tournament semi-finals, Henderson soundly defeated Aaron Sieracki 12-2, thus claiming entry into Saturday’s Challenge Tournament Finals versus Ethan Bosch. The World Team Trials winners will represent the United States in the World Championships at Madison Square Garden on September 25 – 29, 2001. |
