Henry Cejudo Says 125 Division Needs New “Storylines”, Not Immediate Rubber Match With Demetrious Johnson

Although Demetrious Johnson defended the UFC’s flyweight title a record 11 times, and holds a win over Henry Cejudo, the new champ says a trilogy fight would not serve the division’s best interests.
Cejudo took the flyweight title from Johnson at UFC 227 earlier this month, by defeating the renowned fighter via split decision. Due to Johnson’s historic reign as the champ, many have argued he deserves an immediate rubber match with Cejudo.
But, during a recent interview with ESPN, Cejudo argued the following (quotes via MMA Mania):
“I would agree when it comes to the statistics side of it,” Cejudo said. “But at the same time, I know what the UFC’s trying to create, man. I had to wait two and a half years to face Demetrious Johnson.
“I had to wait, too. And it’s also good, too, for our weight class to start new storylines that have noting to do with Demetrious Johnson. We need new storylines in our weight class.”
“Think about it…let’s just say Demetrious Johnson beats me for the trilogy. Again, that goes back to not building a storyline. I think Demetrious Johnson may agree with me. Just for the sake of our weight class, I think it would be good. I think it would be good to see somebody else, for now, except for Demetrious Johnson.”
Following UFC 227, Johnson reported he believes he may have torn his LCL in the fight. The former champ is awaiting test results on his knee.
