Holly Holm Reflects on Loss to Valentina Shevchenko, Says Broken Thumb Not Why She Lost

As Holly Holm continues to recover from the broken hand she incurred during her July 23rd defeat to Valentina Shevchenko, the former bantamweight champ says the injury isn’t why she lost the bout.

Holm faced Shevchenko in the main event of UFC on FOX 20, and lost to the decorated striker via unanimous decision. Recently Holm appeared on “The MMA Hour”, and the former boxing champ was asked about the defeat. After Holm reported she believes she broke her thumb in the fourth round of the bout, the 35 year-old stated (quote via MMA Fighting.com):

“We had the right game plan, I just didn’t perform it,” Holm said. “A lot of what [Shevchenko] was throwing were counter-hooks and things like that. We knew that was going to be there, there was nothing that should have shocked me or anything. She’s very tough, I take nothing away from her. But breaking my thumb was not why I lost the fight. I threw an overhand, I know what punch it is if I watch the fight, and I’m pretty sure it was in the fourth round. I threw an overhand and I caught nothing but thumb, and I just thought I jammed it. I thought, ew, this might hurt later. And I threw another one and though, oh no, yeah, that one’s real bad.”

Holm added that her thumb is almost healed and that she’s been doing some limited sparring. The Jackson-Wink MMA fighter’s pro MMA record stands at 10-2.
