Igor Vovchanchyn And Brad Kohlarpull Out Of Pride-16

From PrideFC:  IGOR VOVCHANCHYN and BRAD KOHLAR PULL OUT OF PRIDE-16 Wednesday, September 19th, Japan time, DSE announced withdrawal of Igor Vovchanchyn and Brad Kohlar from PRIDE-16. On September 17th, DSE was informed from Igor about his injury on his elbow that was occurred during his training. As of Wednesday, he was still suffering the injury and DSE made a decision of his withdraw from PRIDE-16. Also at the same time DSE announced Brad Kohlar’s withdraw from PRIDE-16, due to his injury on his ankle. Since then DSE has been trying to find out two replacement fighters for both Schilt and Shoji. However, after many conversations and negotiations DSE has finalized Schilt and Shoji would be facing each other in the ring*. Cards have been changed as follows.
PRIDE-17 "PRIDE FIGHTING CHAMPION CHAOS"  DSE announced PRIDE-17 "PRIDE FIGHTING: CHAMPIONSHIP CHAOS" would be held on November 3rd in Tokyo Dome which has approximately 60,000 seats capacity. This will be the biggest PRIDE show in 2001 and expected to consist of at least two main cards to provide both of "PRIDE MIDDLE WEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP" and "PRIDE HEAVY WEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP". As it was formally announced, Saku vs. Wanderlei rematch will be the Middle Weight Championship, possibly for under 205 lbs, and the winner of the up coming fight of Mark Coleman and Rodrigo Nogueira may be a first contender of the Heavy Weight title match. Freak Injury Forces Belfort Out of UFC 33 UFC "Devastated" by Untimely News By Aaron Crecy  An unlikely injury has forced Brazilian Vitor Belfort to withdraw from his bout versus Ultimate Fighting Championship Light Heavyweight titleholder Tito Ortiz at UFC 33 in Las Vegas. Scheduled to depart from Brazil on Friday for the September 28 fight in Las Vegas, Belfort reportedly suffered deep lacerations when his arm smashed through a window during training on Tuesday. "Apparently, Belfort’s arm inadvertently went through a window next to the ring in his gym when he threw a punch, opening a cut on the triceps and upper arm that required 30 stitches to close," explained beleaguered UFC president Dana White. "I spoke with his doctor, and he will be unable to train for at least 40 days." It is the second potentially ruinous event that has befallen UFC 33 in the past week. First, in the wake of the World Trade Center bombing, it was announced that the middleweight championship boxing match between Felix Trinidad and Bernard Hopkins originally slated for September 15 at Madison Square Garden was rescheduled to Saturday, September 29. With such a high level a championship bout now taking place the same weekend as UFC 33, fans who might once have purchased both pay-per-view events two weeks apart may be unwilling to do so on consecutive evenings. Needing at least 100,000 pay-per-view buys just to break even, the loss of Belfort could further detract from the UFC’s ability to achieve that goal. "We are devastated by this news," White said dejectedly. "However, I want to assure the fans that we are doing the best we can to replace Vitor with credible opponent." White mentioned former UFC mainstay Ken Shamrock as a potential replacement for Belfort, pending negotiations. However, an agreement was yet to be reached as of early Wednesday morning. Because Shamrock could have difficulty making the 204.9 lb. weight limit for the light heavyweight class, it is likely that a match up between the Lion’s Den legend and Ortiz would be a heavyweight non-title fight. Vladimir Matyushenko, already scheduled to fight Kevin Randleman at UFC 33, is another possible fill-in. |
