Ironheart Crown Returns To Chicago
IRONHEART CROWN RETURNS TO CHICAGO By Chris Onzuka (CHICAGO, IL) – The date is set. November 4, 2000, the Ironheart Crown will return to the legendary St. Andrew’s Arena, located at 1658 W. Addison in the Windy City. Chicago’s MMA scene has been relatively quiet since the debut of the inaugural Ironheart Crown in November of 1999. However, with the help of promoters Michael Castellano (Chicago Challenge) and the late Tom Letuli (Bangkok Brawl), matchmaker Eric Moon is putting together another great show. This event will be held in remembrance of Tom Letuli. When asked what the Ironheart Crown 2 had in the works. Moon replied, "I don’t want to spoil the surprise just yet, but let’s just say that if the fans liked what they saw last year, this show is really gonna get them off." If the event’s debut was any indication of what fans can expect to see again at this year’s show, Chicago is in for a night of excitement. Last year’s production raised the standard for MMA in the Midwest. Two fights ended in spectacular 360-degree, spinning knockouts. Most of the others ended in technically sound submissions, and three of the fights had spectators on the edge of their seats as these close matches went into overtime, ending in unexpected and often controversial decisions. "It was a good mix," Moon comments. "The fights weren’t simple displays of grappling technique. There was a lot of stand up action. Lots of punching and kicking. Jason Glabus showed us just how effective knee strikes can be against a grappler’s clinch, and Phil Johns showed us that sometimes an NCAA wrestler can actually punch." After making quick work of his first opponent, 3-time NCAA wrestling champion Phil Johns went on to KO Carlson Gracie Team fighter, Chris Gochis, in a record time of just six seconds. Other highlights of the show included the war between Steve Berger and 2-time UFC veteran Shoney Carter and Leo Valdes’ explosive assault on Hackney fighter, Keith Black. When asked if the card was complete yet, Moon replied, "Its not completely full. I got a few solid guys, big names in the Midwest, and I have a few other fighters that I haven’t yet guaranteed a spot to. I’m looking for the best competitors I can find, and I don’t want to be so anxious to finish the card that I miss out on some good, quality fighters." The first Ironheart Crown featured three 4-man tournaments and some single matches. The second IHC will continue to consist of a format that fans love, tournaments. The IHC2 will host four 4-man tournaments; lightweight (135 – 155), middleweight (155 – 175), heavyweight (175 – 200), and open-weight (200 – 230). Moon pulled out all the stops on his first event and his second is no different. "We have cash prizes, medals, and belts," Moon says. "The belts are great this year. They’re the same ones that were used in a recent World Extreme Fighting event. They’re HUGE!" Moon is putting his heart and soul into the event. "It’s not the UFC, but it’s a real quality show. It’s the biggest and best MMA display in Chicago, and we take it very seriously. Everything is very professional. I’m not in this for the money. You can’t make money at this level when you’re spending a lot on prizes, quality staff, and top-notch production. I just want to put on a good show. I want to find the best fighters I can get, and put them in an event they can be proud of. An event that makes the sport look good in the public eye." While the card is still being finalized, interested fans or fighters can contact Eric Moon at 773-793-6555, or visit www.ironheartcrown.com for more information. Moon is still accepting applications from experienced fighters who are interested. Full Contact Fighter will be there to cover the event. Stay tuned, I am still trying to squeeze out the current fight card from Eric Moon. I will make it available, as soon as I get it. |
