King of The Cage 9 Which style will remain supreme? Which man will be left standing? Who will be the King of the Cage?

In the past, you may have read about FCF reporter Marc Scott’s journey to Thailand where he trained and fought Muay Thai. Ever the world traveler, Marc is currently on a new quest, this time to beautiful Brazil, where he will "drink from the source" at the new Gracie Camp… Part Two: Rio De Janeiro Life at Gracie Camp is nothing like my early years at Camp Otterdale in the Canadian Wilderness. There are no arts and crafts, canoe trips, or lukewarm porridge. The days consist of food, Jiu-Jitsu, food and more Jiu-Jitsu…all in all a pretty idyllic lifestyle. The days begin at the very reasonable hour of nine o’clock when we are woken and summoned downstairs for breakfast. I must admit though I had none too small a feeling of dread on my chances of surviving a diet consisting solely of complex combination of fruits, vegetables, and white turkey breast. My girlfriend and friends back home had real concerns that after my usual diet of steak, beer, and margaritas, the shock to my system would be too much. In reality the food is great. Breakfast for the most part consists of fresh fruits, turkey breast sandwiches, as well as all the fresh fruit juice we can drink. Ahhh the juice, watermelon juice, orange juice, guava juice, carrot and apple juice, guava and apple juice, watermelon-guava and…well you get the picture.
Depending on the amount of people at the camp, the teaching follows either a logical progression of techniques on which to build your game, or if there is a smaller amount, a more personal teaching style, either way we receive great attention from the teachers and world class instruction. After training, it is time for a quick sauna and then time to have a light lunch or maybe some acai. Acai is a fruit drink native to Brazil that is a must for everyone. After lunch we head upstairs to the TV room to watch some MMA or maybe a Jiu-Jitsu match or two. The afternoon is time to unwind and relax, maybe a trip to do some shopping or down to the beach for some sun and surf. Relaxing in the afternoon is important because come 5:30 it’s off to Gracie Barra in Rio itself for the night’s training. Gracie Barra is a story unto itself… More on Marc’s adventure soon! |
From the event’s promoter: Hughes-Gomm Bout Highlights Extreme 43 in Utah OREM, Utah — While the possibilities of getting into Pride or returning to the UFC seem promising, MMA veteran Matt Hughes has elected not to sit back and wait for somebody to call. Hughes, one of the top-ranked 170-pound fighters in the world, will headline Extreme Challenge 43 on Saturday, Sept. 8, at the 10,000-seat McKay Events Center in Orem, Utah. His opponent will be hometown favorite Steve Gomm of Salt Lake City. "I like to compete, so until I have something solid, like a big event to train for, I’d like to keep fighting," Hughes said. "I don’t know a lot about Gomm, but he has a win over Chris Brennan, so obviously he is somebody you can’t take lightly." Gomm, who trains at Walt Bayless Combat Jiu-Jitsu, is no stranger to top competition. Besides beating Brennan, he lost by decision to unbeaten and world ranked Sean Sherk. Tickets for the event cost from $20 to $50 and are available at all Smith Tixx locations and the McKay Events Center box office 801 764-SHOW. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., first fight at 7:30 p.m. In addition to 9 pro bouts, UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture and UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver will be on hand to sign autographs and meet their fans. In a feature bout, the ironman of MMA fighting, Travis Fulton of Cedar Falls, Iowa, will look for the 100th victory of his career when he faces local standout Griffen Reynaud of Bountiful, Utah. Reynaud also is used to top competition, having faced UFC veterans Jeremy Horn and Cal Washam in previous events. The show will make the return of former Lion’s Den fighter Phil Henderson, a Salt Lake City native. He’ll face Extreme Challenge veteran Rick Gravesen. Other local fighters competing include: Justin Ellison, Dave Phillips, Justin Sessions and David Bancroft. Extreme Challenge 43 Lineup

From the event’s promoter: HOOKnSHOOT SPIRIT: Ready to Rock! Evansville Memorial Coliseum – Evansville, IN September 15th, 2001 – 7:00 PM Start (CST) "Once again, we are proud to announce Japan’s Official SHOOTO is on board for this show" whoops ‘Mr. Clean’, promoter Jeff Osborne. "We have been working with them for over one year now, and we are looking forward to having SHOOTO on this show." Soon, we will announce HOOKnSHOOT’s new official weight classes." states Osborne. "We are working on a foward thinking version, something that acknowledges the influences in the USA of the big, positive changes in the sport. Look for more on this soon" says Osborne. "As for the show, well this is looking like the biggest show in our history, so we are very much anticipating fight night." Osborne states happily. "We have three title fights on the same card for the first time, including our Heavyweight Title on the line, with Carlos Barreto taking on Roger Neff. The always exciting Phil Johns is back, he is at his best in HnS, and I think Steibling-Rockel is going to be a war that is impossible to call a winner on in advance." continues Osborne. "We are also really psyched about signing "Cacareco" against Cris Monson. In Barreto, and now "Cacareco" we think we have two athletes that people in Brazil really want to see. "Cacareco", from Ruas Team, had a couple of down matchs in RINGS, now he returns to NHB, where I think he belongs. He has beaten heath herring, and has tons of fights under brutal, "Brazilian" conditions. Monson is super tough as well, with a win over Dave Menne in RINGS USA, and we know about his coach, Matt Hume, we know he will be well schooledl. We look forward to seeing this match" describes Osborne. "The other match we announced recently is Jason Rigsby and Manuel Garcia." continues the ecstatic Osborne. "Manuel is a Vale Tudo Champion from Spain, at 185 lbs, he is 6-0 and has won matches in 4 weight classes in Europe. he has trained with good people throughout his career, a real nomad. In rigsby, we have an up and comer from the Illinois area. We have two stand outs from local scenes coming to square off at HnS. I expect a great match" Osborne plugs away. So, with SHOOTO sanctioning the undercard, 3 Title matches, Brazilians, Spaniards and Matamoros the mad Costa Rican, I think we are beginning to have an International show. And we usually save our big shows for November! HOOKnSHOOT SPIRIT is going to be one to watch!" concludes Oborne. For more information and tickets, visit FIGHTWORLD.COM’s HOOKnSHOOT section!
