Jake Matthews Calls For Top 15 Ranked Opponent, Following Impressive, UFC Nashville Win
By FCF Staff
After extending his winning streak to three with an impressive win at UFC Nashville, Jake Matthews is targeting a bout with a top 15-ranked, welterweight.
Matthews faced Chidi Njokuani on Saturday night, and quickly submitted the dangerous striker with a rear-naked-choke. The victory was Matthew’s 22nd to date, and followed wins over Francisco Prado and Philip Rowe.
During his post-fight, Octagon interview, Matthews proceeded to call for a fight with a ranked contender (quote via MMA Junkie.com).
“My coach would hate it if I didn’t call out Gilbert Burns,” Matthews said. “I took Michael Morales to a hard decision. None of these top 15 guys can stand with Michael Morales. I stood with him. I deserve to be in there with those boys, so if we can organize a top 15 (fight), I’ll be there.”
Matthews (22-7) faced the aforementioned Morales in November, 2023, and lost via unanimous decision. The Australian fighter has gone 4 and 1 in his last five contests.
