Fans and observers continue to play the waiting game to see whether Tom Aspinall and Jon Jones will ever fight. But, now “Bones” is raising the prospect of another fight the MMA world was clamoring for, a showdown with Francis Ngannou.

For months now, Jones has largely distanced himself from a bout with the UFC’s interim heavyweight champ, Aspinall. The former light-heavyweight and current heavyweight champ reported last November he would be open to fighting Aspinall, if the UFC tabled a significant financial offer. But, the polarizing fighter has also repeatedly questioned the notion he needs to fight Aspinall to further entrench his legacy.

More recently, Jones responded to recent comments from Ngannou’s coach, Eric Nicksick, regarding the future of Ngannou. While speaking with “Home of Fight“, Nicksick relayed he believes Ngannou could be willing to return to the UFC, despite his well-documented and contentious split from the promotion.

Via social media, Jones posted this:

“I’m hearing Francis Ngannou is still interested. Now we’re talking. That’s a real superfight. A clash of champions, not just hype. He held the UFC belt, I’ve defended mine for over a decade. Two kings from different roads. Not just one legend facing a mouth that’s hot right now, but two real legacies colliding. That’s the kind of fight that actually adds something special to my story. At least from my point of view.”

Ngannou ultimately exited the UFC in 2022 after he was unable to come to terms on a new contract. At the time, both Jones and Ngannou were campaigning for a bout between the two. UFC CEO Dana White proceeded to claim he will never work with Ngannou again.

Ngannou proceeded to sign with the PFL, and in October, 2024, he knocked out Renan Ferreira to win the Super Fights heavyweight title. The feared slugger has also competed in two boxing bouts. In October, 2023, Ngannou shocked the boxing world by knocking Tyson Fury down before dropping a split decision.

In Ngannou’s next boxing match against Anthony Joshua in March, 2024, he was brutally KO’d in round two.
