Leon Edwards: Jorge Masvidal & Ben Askren Are “Amateur”
By FCF Staff
Jorge Masvidal electrified the MMA world at UFC 239 by knocking out Ben Askren in just 5 seconds. But, following Leon Edwards’ win at UFC Sacramento, the welterweight blasted the abilities of both Askren and Masvidal.
Edwards took on Rafael dos Anjos at UFC Sacramento on Saturday, and worked his way to a unanimous decision win. Afterward, Edwards called for a fight with Masvidal, and while speaking to the media, he had this to say about “Gamebred” and Askren (quotes via MMA Fighting):
“I believe Masvidal is an amateur,” Edwards said. “He’s beaten nobody that I can say that he’s amazing. He did a flying knee against Ben. Ben is an amateur, he’s slow, he’s old, he’s a grappler. He’s taken some big confidence from that, I take nothing from it. It’s one of them things I think if they fought 10 out of 10 times, that would never happen again.
“So I believe I’m better than Masvidal anywhere in the fight game and I will get the opportunity to prove it.”
Since Edwards’ callout on Saturday, Masvidal has said he intends to wait for a shot at the welterweight title. With the win on Saturday, the 27-year-old Edwards extended his winning streak to eight.
