Leon Edwards and Conor McGregor are booked for other challenges next. But, recently the UFC welterweight champ said he’d be more than willing to face the controversial star later this year.

Edwards is preparing to fight surging contender Belal Muhammad at UFC 304, which will take place July 27th in Manchester, England. McGregor, meanwhile, is set to face Michael Chandler at UFC 303, June 29th in Las Vegas. The fight will be contested at welterweight.

Ahead of his match-up with Muhammad, Edwards appeared on “The MMA Hour”. When asked about the prospect of fighting McGregor, if both men are victorious in their next fights, Edwards made it clear he’s on board (quotes via MMA Fighting.com).

“One hundred percent. Why not? Let’s give him the opportunity to become three-division world champion,” Edwards said. “Give me the opportunity to take out a guy like Conor McGregor. New York, that would be perfect. That is the fight. I feel like he’s got to take out Michael, I take out ‘No-one-remembers-his-name’ and we’ll go from there. We’ll go to New York, MSG, let’s go!

“That’s the fight. We’ve got business to take care of, but that’s the fight. That’s what needs to happen and it should happen.”

Currently, McGregor is not a ranked fighter, as he hasn’t competed since July, 2021, when he broke his leg in a lightweight fight with Dustin Poirier. The former lightweight and featherweight champ hasn’t fought at welterweight since January, 2020, when he stopped Donald Cerrone.
