Daniel Cormier recently relayed that he intends to call for a title shot at light-heavyweight, after he fights heavyweight Roy Nelson at UFC 166, and Lyoto Machida isn’t a fan of the idea.

Machida is scheduled to fight Phil Davis at UFC 163 next weekend, and when the light-heavyweight division’s #1 contender was asked about Cormier’s plan during a media call Thursday, “The Dragon” stated:

“I believe there’s a ranking and it should be followed,” said Machida, who is coming off victories over Dan Henderson and Ryan Bader. “There’s a lot of guys in line right now at this weight class to fight for a title. I’ve been waiting in line, there’s Glover Teixeira, there’s Phil Davis, so there’s a lot of guys in there in the mix. If he’s going to move down to 205, he’s going to need to put a couple fights in, or at least have a significant win in a big fight, and I don’t think it’s right for him to just come in and cut the line.”

Cormier has been preparing to move to light-heavyweight, and UFC President Dana White has said the undefeated fighter could receive an immediate title shot when he does. Who will challenge for the belt next, however, will likely depend on how Cormier, Machida and Teixeira perform in their upcoming bouts.

Light-heavyweight champ Jon Jones is scheduled to fight Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165 on September 21st.
