North American Challenge 11
North American Challenge 11 Held July 5, 2003 At the Squamish Nations Rec Centre Vancouver, BC, Canada By Mike Neva
For the 11th time, the little known North American Challenge unveiled a mixed card of kickboxing, muay thai, and pankration to the Vancouver fight fans. The format for this event was to fill the card with kickboxing and muay thai matches and introduce the audience to mma with only one scheduled pankration match. Newcomer Eric Wirt looked to get his feet wet in the mma game as he stepped up to fight brazilian jiu-jitsu practioner Garrett Davis. In what looked more like a jiu jitsu match, both fighters traded submission attempts in the opening round. Davis managed a take down to open round two and easily passed to side mount. Davis then adeptly pinned Wirt’s right arm and gave up the top position to clamp on a tight arm triangle choke for the submission victory. In other action, KOTC veteran Joey Guel looked to shake off the ring rust in a three round kickboxing match. Guel, who recently celebrated the birth of his first daughter, stated before the match that due to the birth of his daughter and a subsequent shin injury he had been unable to properly train for the fight. The lack of training time became quickly apparent, as Jondal Rymple was able to knock down Guel twice on route to a decisive unanimous decision. Kickboxing Muay Thai
