Opinion: Melvin Guillard Might Not Find Success Again

Melvin Guillard

By Michael Hatamoto

Melvin Guillard has lost four of his last five fights and is fighting for his UFC life when he meets Mac Danzig at UFC on Fox 8 in late July.

The 30-year-old fighter is now training at the Grudge Training Center in Colorado, after saying that he ‘couldn’t win’ while training with the Blackzilians.

Guillard announced he would leave the Florida-based Blackzilians team in favor of returning to Jackson’s MMA, though Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone told Guillard that some people voted he shouldn’t be allowed back (for now). Coach Greg Jackson verified the statement and said while most of the fight team supported Guillard to rejoin the team, a few fighters didn’t approve of the move.

I think Guillard’s decision to leave the Blackzilians won’t negatively impact his ability to win – especially since heading to Team Grudge – but it’s clear he needs to be in the right mental state to find success.

If head coach Trevor Wittman can keep Guillard focused on training hard and keeping his head clear, he certainly has the tools to beat Danzig. Keep him occupied in the gym and training hard, along with helping his new teammates, and there is potential for a rejuvenated fighter that fans enjoy seeing compete.

Thankfully for Guillard, his latest round of camp drama happened around four months ahead of the fight, so he’ll have plenty of time to settle in at Grudge.
