A Prelude to Combat
By Jim Genia

Matt Serra. Nick Serra. Ricardo Almeida. Phil Baroni. Chris Liguori. What do all these mixed martial artists have in common? They’re all UFC veterans, and they were all plucked from the ranks of Lou Neglia and Ray Longo’s fighting events! Showcasing the best in local talent, the latest installment of Ring of Combat comes to the Rexplex Sports Complex in Elizabeth, New Jersey, on Saturday, December 6th – and representatives from Team Renzo Gracie, the Serra/Longo Competition Team, Team Tiger Schulmann, and Team BAMA will battle it out. Here’s a brief look at some of the fighters on the card:

Carlos Moreno
Carlos Moreno – Team BAMA
A heavyweight with a reputation for knockouts, Moreno is known for sending the competition into dreamland with his accurate and extremely heavy hands. Unfortunately, this has left him sitting on the sidelines more often than not as promoters struggle to find him opponents. Enter: the "Juice", Justin Villella. Hailing from Pennsylvania, the Juice sports a 4-0 record and is the heavyweight champ of the Ohio Fighting Alliance. Will he end up unconscious, like the others who have dared to stand and trade with Moreno?
"I hear he’s a striker," says Moreno. "So it’s gonna be a good stand-up match until he tries to tie up. Then we’ll see how it goes from there."

Mike Stine
Mike Stine – Team Tiger Schulmann
Stine is a Tiger Schulmann Karate representative who has honed his skills at local grappling tournaments. In the MMA arena, he’s coming off a quick but impressive submission win over Alex Wilkie’s Pat Russo, and will square off against wrestler Derex Johnson at Ring of Combat 5. Will he force his opponent to tap? Or will his ground defense and stand-up get tested?
"I’ve heard good things about my opponent," says Stine, who asserts he’s just as good on his feet as he is on the mat. "I haven’t seen any tape on him, but that’s just made me train harder."

Derex Johnson
Derex Johnson – Team Ricardo Almeida
His first MMA bout ended with him tapping to jiu-jitsu stud and Ring of Combat champ Pete "Drago" Sell. His second bout ended with a close decision going to his opponent, Greg Killian. But they say the third time’s the charm, and with a recent shift in his training focus, Johnson will be out to secure that much needed win with a vengeance. With his wrestling skills, the takedowns are probably his if he wants them. Will it be enough to impose his will on Stine?

Jay Hieron
Jay Hieron – Bellmore Kickboxing/Rodrigo Gracie
He’s an All-American wrestler from Hofstra University, a jiu-jitsu blue belt, and he’s fresh off an MMA win via TKO (unanswered strikes). In short, the fierce and aggressive Hieron is a rising star and up-and-coming badass.

Luke Cummo
Luke Cummo – Serra-Longo Competition Team
Though his last bout ended in a loss (a close decision to Team Tiger Schulmann rival Dave Tirelli), Cummo is certainly no pushover. He can grapple, he can strike, and he can fight well from the clinch. So what’s standing between him and redemption? Phil Mazurrco – a strong wrestler with solid takedowns. Someone’s going to get grounded and pounded or someone’s going to get submitted, but either way, expect this one to be a war!

Fight Card:

  • Carlos Moreno Vs. Justin Villella
  • Anthony Ladonna Vs. Eddie Alvarez
  • Mike Stine Vs. Derex Johnson
  • Jay Hieron Vs. Jermaine Johnson
  • Chris Johnson Vs. Rob Copenhaver
  • Luke Cummo Vs. Phil Mazzurco
  • Valodia Gevorgyan Vs. Michael Murray

European Vale Tudo Set to Debut with Mezger Leading the Way
By Eduardo Alonso

Proving that the sport of MMA keeps on growing everywhere with new events appearing all the time, as it has become a recent trend even in Brazil for instance, such an important continent as Europe couldn’t be left out of this movement and with de development of the sport in mind a new premier MMA show is being born next weekend. The first edition of European Vale Tudo (EVT) will grace the beautiful city of Copenhagen, in Denmark, this next Saturday December 6th at Dansborghallen, expecting a selective crowd of 1.000 spectators. With the effort of people like August Wallen and Marko Ervasti, who promote the already established Fighter Extreme in
Sweden, the MMA scene in Scandinavia is growing so quickly that the tendency is for that region of Europe, along with countries such as Holland and the UK, to lead the way for the rest of the continent bringing our sport to bigger levels of popularity there, opening the way for local talents to develop their skills and get the exposure they badly need. This last months alone, Scandinavia saw seminars with the likes of PRIDE fighter Murilo Ninja Rua and UFC Champion Randy Couture, seasoned fighter Vernon White fighting and losing to August Wallen in Sweden and now they’ll be treated to European Vale Tudo in Denmark, featuring none other than Lion’s Den fighter Guy Mezger in the main event, in a clear sight of what’s coming on in the future.
The show itself will have a set of rules just like the UFC ones, and it’ll take place on a cage, being the first time ever a show in Nordic countries uses a cage for their fights. The main reason for the show to take place in Copenhagen, is that unfortunatelly full MMA rules such as the UFC ones are still forbidden in Sweden for instance, therefore EVT is also a much needed step in a long walk to take MMA in its full rules back to other countries in Scandinavia [The Fighter Extreme show in Sweden uses no strikes in the ground]. With the goal and ambition of not only being a European talent seeker as well as an international show, as the presence of Mezger may tell, the promoters of EVT have their eyes set in doing more shows in 2004, always with international presence mixing some well known stars of the worldwide MMA scene with the “cream of the crop” Europe has to offer, this way spreading the sport in the old continent as well as bringing new talent to the table all the time. The fighting card of European Vale Tudo 1 Genesis, will feature nine fights counting with fighters from seven countries such as USA, Spain, UK, Germany and needless to say Nordic countries like Denmark, Sweden and Norway. The main event will match up PRIDE and UFC veteran Guy Mezger facing Daniel Bergman from Sweden. Mezger comes as the favorite to win this fight, but Daniel is a tough costumer and this fight certainly means a lot to him, so it shall be interesting. Other
interesting bouts will feature Warriors War veteran Antonio Tello facing Richard Bohlenius, who is regarded as one of the top BJJ fighters in Sweden, Lion’s Den fighter Travis Lutter against Extreme Brawl veteran Mark Epstein, and two Shooto veterans facing each other as Mario Stapel comes right after a questionable DQ in the last Shooto show in Japan hungry for a win to face Thomas Hytten from Norway.FCF will keep an eye at some of the best MMA Europe has to offer, here’s the fight card for European Vale Tudo 1 Genesis, this next Saturday December 6th:

  • Guy Mezger (USA) vs. Daniel Bergman (Sweden)
  • Scott Ireland (UK) vs. Lars Besand (Denmark)
  • Antonio Tello (Spain) vs. Richard Bohlenius (Sweden)
  • Toni Vivas (Spain) vs. Martin Kampmann (Denmark)
  • Travis Lutter (USA) vs. Mark Epstein (UK)
  • Dersu Lema (Spain) vs. Kim Hovgaard (Denmark)
  • Mario Stapel (Germany) vs. Thomas Hytten (Norway)
  • Ski Svirskis (UK) vs. Joakim Engberg (Sweden)
  • Sonny Malmkvist Nielsen (Denmark) vs. Christian Graugart (Denmark)

From the event’s promoter:

"This is a special show for me, because it is only a few miles from my hometown," Curran said. "I’m excited to get back in the ring."
