Report: Anthony Johnson Receives New Opponent For Bellator LHW GP

Anthony Johnson

By FCF Staff

Following the news that Yoel Romero has been removed from Bellator’s light heavyweight grand prix, and a fight with Anthony Johnson, the promotion has signed a new opponent for ‘Rumble’.

Recently Bellator announced that Romero has not been medically cleared to fight on May 7, and that he will no longer compete in the tournament.

According to a report from ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, however, sources say Bellator has tapped Jose Augusto to fight Johnson on May 7. MMA Junkie is reporting that Bellator’s confirmed the bout will serve as a quarter-final fight for the tourney.

Helwani also reported that an eye issue is why Romero was not medically cleared to compete.

Johnson (22-6) hasn’t fought since April 2017 when he was submitted by then UFC light heavyweight champ, Daniel Cormier.

August (7-2) has won five straight and is coming off a submission win over Jonathan Wilson last month, in what was his Bellator debut.

The May 7 Bellator 258 card will take place in Uncasville, Connecticut. The event will also see bantamweight champ Juan Archuleta battle Sergio Pettis.
