Report: Bellator’s Bjorn Rebney Doesn’t Foresee Offer to Free Agent Ben Askren

By FCF Staff

Not long after Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney relayed the promotion hoped to negotiate a new deal with its welterweight champion Ben Askren, it appears as though the free agent fighter could be on his way out.

Recently UFC President Dana White stated that the promotion was interested in talking to Askren, and now in a recent story with ESPN.com, Rebney has conceded he doesn’t believe Bellator will be making the fighter an “offer at this point.” Although Rebney noted in the report that they will look at any offer the UFC makes Askren, he added that the promotion won’t stand in the way of the welterweight’s departure, and that he hopes to see “Funky” fight Georges St. Pierre at some juncture.

Rebney also alluded to the fact that Askren’s stifling and wrestling based style isn’t “for everyone”, but that he has nothing but “good things” to say about the decorated wrestler.

It should also be noted that last April, White was highly critical of Askren’s approach to fighting, but since then the 29 year-old has recorded stoppage wins over Karl Amoussou and most recently Andrey Koreshkov.

Askren has gone 12-0 now since he transitioned into MMA in 2009.
