Report: BJ Penn Considering Return as Lightweight

By FCF Staff

BJ Penn stopped short of announcing his retirement, following the unanimous decision loss he suffered versus Rory MacDonald in December, and now it looks as though the former champ could fight again.

According to a report from the UFC Tonight program, Penn is currently training and will evaluate how he feels in the coming months. If things go well the 34 year-old vet will fight again at 155 pounds, rather than welterweight, where he’s winless in three straight bouts.

The only men to defeat Penn at lightweight are former champs Jens Pulver and Frankie Edgar. During his run as the 155 pound champion, Penn defeated the likes of Diego Sanchez, Sean Sherk and Kenny Florian.

Penn’s last victory took place in November, 2010, when he knocked out fellow former welterweight champ Matt Hughes, to take their rubber match series.

It will be interesting to see how UFC President Dana White reacts to Penn’s decision, if he decides to compete again, as the ZUFFA exec has called on the legendary fighter to retire.
