Extreme Fighting Championship Africa has announced that Booto Guylain has died, after the 29 year-old fighter incurred a serious head injury during the promotion’s February 27th event in Johannesburg, South Africa.

According to the promotion’s report, Guylain “was stabilised by the on-site medical team and transported to hospital where he was treated for swelling and bleeding on the brain” following the recent bout. The fighter, however, passed away on Wednesday as a result of the injury.

“We are devastated,” EFC Africa president Cairo Howarth was quoted saying in the official announcement. “This is a huge loss to the sport and to all who know him. Our thoughts are with his family in this trying time.”

Guylain’s family will reportedly receive financial support from the promotion’s disability provider, ONE Plan.

Fighters who compete on the upcoming, March 28th EFC Africa card will be wearing black armbands in memory of Guylain.
