Heading into Saturday’s UFC 171 card, the pre-fight narrative has been that Carlos Condit will secure another crack at the welterweight title, provided he defeats Tyron Woodley. In fact, Woodley has also said he believes their fight will determine who the division’s number one challenger is. Well, according to UFC President Dana White, nothing is set in stone.

While speaking to the press on Thursday, White relayed the following, while discussing whether the winner of Condit-Woodley will advance to a title shot (quote via MMA Fighting.com):

“I don’t know. We’ll see what happens,” said White. “It’s a great card with great fights, but there’s a lot of great fights at 170 [pounds] on this card. I think pretty much anybody who’s fighting on this card to come off looking great and exciting, anybody can get a shot.

“There’s no guarantees anywhere, ever, in life. They’re going to have to come out and perform. [The welterweight division] is wide open.”

One of the reasons White may be stopping short of guaranteeing a title shot to the winner of Condit-Woodley, is because Hector Lombard will battle Jake Shields Saturday as well.

Shields has re-established himself at 170 thanks to a four fight, undefeated streak, and Lombard could also be within reach of a title shot if he scores another highlight reel finish.
