Report: Firas Zahabi Believes Latest GSP Injury Could Motivate Comeback

Georges St. Pierre

By FCF Staff

When news surfaced recently that Georges St-Pierre would undergo knee surgery once again, there was widespread speculation that it might end any prospect of him returning to the Octagon. According to the welterweight’s coach, however, the injury could in fact motivate the former UFC champ to return.

St-Pierre recently announced that his knee surgery was a success, and that his “road to recovery has started again.” In a follow up interview with MMA Junkie.com, here is some of what GSP’s coach Firas Zahabi had to say about the fighter, and his future:

“I think this injury, because he’s going to be away from training for so long, could cause him to want to fight again,” Zahabi said. “When your girlfriend dumps you, you want her more than ever before. MMA just kind of put him on the sidelines, and now he probably wants MMA more now than ever before. It’s the way it is – it’s human nature.”

Following St-Pierre’s split decision win over Johny Hendricks in November, the 32 year-old announced he was taking a break from fighting to address some personal issues. Since then, GSP has also expressed serious concerns about performance enhancing drugs in MMA, and the sport’s current testing regimes.
