Report: Phil Davis Says Jon Jones “Wants More of the Softer Side of the Division”
By FCF Staff
Jon Jones may be the UFC’s number one ranked, pound-for-pound fighter, but light-heavyweight Phil Davis apparently believes the champ may be avoiding the division’s sternest tests.
Following his tightly contested, decision win over Alexander Gustafsson in September, Jones elected to fight Glover Teixeira next, rather than immediately rematch “The Mauler.” Well, in a recent interview with MMA Fighting.com, here is some of what Davis had to say about Jones’ decision.
“He wants more of the softer side of the division,” said Davis, who has trained with Gustafsson extensively in the past.
“Most people would rematch,” furthered Davis, while discussing the epic Jones-Gustafsson bout at UFC 165. “But he said, forget about that, forget about you.’ I find that interesting. Very interesting.”
Davis did go on to say that Teixeira is a “big, scary guy” and that the Brazilian will be a “tough fight” for the champion.
Jones will fight Teixeira at UFC 172 on April 26th, which is the same card that Davis will battle Anthony Johnson.
