Rory MacDonald on Why Primary Focus is Beating Douglas Lima, Not $1 Million Dollar Prize

Rory MacDonald will collect a $1 million dollar prize if he beats Douglas Lima in the finals of Bellator’s welterweight grand prix. But, according to the champion, defeating Lima for a second time and in convincing fashion is his primary focus.
MacDonald and Lima will fight for the second time on October 6th at Bellator 232. The two met for the first time in January, 2018, and MacDonald won the bout via decision.
Lima has advanced to the tourney’s finals by choking out Andrey Koreshkov and then knocking out Michael Page in devastating fashion. MacDonald’s road to the finals, however, has been much tougher. The UFC vet got by Jon Fitch via a majority draw, and then in the semifinals, he defeated Neiman Gracie via decision.
The Canadian was on hand at Bellator 225 this weekend. While discussing his upcoming bout with Lima and the grand prize, MacDonald said this (quote via MMA Junkie):
“$1 million is motivating, sure,” MacDonald said. “But the rematch is important. I have to put on a solid performance. I have to put on my best performance to close out this tournament to put a stamp on this rivalry since our last fight. That’s the most important thing for me.
“The million dollars is really awesome. What a blessing that would be. But I’m not really focused on it.”
Bellator 232 will take place at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.
