"The Last Word" Moved to Wednesday
By Jeffrey Thaler
Fox Sports Network has just announced that the episode of "The Last Word" featuring International Fighting Championships commissioner Paul Smith and fighter John Lewis has been moved to Wednesday May 24th. The show, which was previously scheduled to air May 23rd, will be devoted entirely to the sport of Mixed Martial Arts.
From the event’s promoter:
Hughes twins triumph in Extreme Challenge
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Matt Hughes claimed his 12th straight victory at Extreme Challenge 32, only a week after a win in World Extreme Fighting and three weeks before fighting in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Hughes, one of the most promising lightweight NHB fighters in the sport, got his patented body-slam takedown in the first 30 seconds against Shawn Peters, passed the guard to gain mount and soon after finished off his opponent with a choke at the 2:52 mark. Peters, from Brampton, Ontario, suffered his first loss.
"Normally, I don’t fight this often," Hughes said. "But this show was near my hometown and had been scheduled for months… it was a chance for many of my friends and relatives to see me and my brother compete."
The "other" Hughes also shined, winning by TKO in 1:46 against previously unbeaten (3-0) Ron Fields of Dayton, Ohio. Mark Hughes is now 2-1 as a professional.
Extreme Challenge 32 was held at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in front of just over 1,500 fans. It was the first-ever NHB event in Springfield.
Matt Hughes, now 16-1, will face Marcello Aguilar in the June 9 UFC in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
In other major bouts, C.J. Fernandez won a unanimous 15-minute decision over Ben Earwood; and Jason Black won a split decision over Steve Berger.
Fernandez, a heavily-muscled lightweight, improved to 8-4 with the win, while Earwood dropped to 11-2.
Black, making his pro debut on a few hours notice, won a very close verdict against Berger, who earlier this year defeated Shonie Carter. Berger, who was scheduled to have a rematch against Andy Sanders, agreed to fight Black (who had a 10-pound weight advantage) when Sanders pulled out of the event.
