IFC Press Release:
IFC WORLD TOUR IFC FIGHTING HITS THE TROPICANA The extreme in fighting sports explodes onto the Atlantic City fight scene on Saturday, September 30th when the International Fighting Championships comes to the Tropicana Casino and Resort with IFC BATTLEGROUND 2000. This ultimate crossover fighting sport features the best fighters of the combat sports – boxing, wrestling, jiu jitsu, karate, kickboxing, jeet kune do, judo, tae kwon do, sambo, ninja and others – utilizing the best techniques from all of those sports while fighting in a caged ring. IFC BATTLEGROUND 2000 will feature two world title fights – the IFC World Heavyweight (195lbs to 225lbs) Championship between current champion Vernon "Tiger" White and former IFC champion "The Janitor" Vladimir Matyushenko and the IFC World Super Heavyweight (225lbs plus) Championship between current champion "Big" Gan McGee and North American Super Heavyweight Champion "Bad" Brad Gabriel. There will also be two four man single elimination tournaments plus preliminary matches for a total of ten fights that night. The main event will be the highly anticipated World Heavyweight Championship. This will be a rubber match between these two great athletes. Matyushenko of Belarus is a world class wrestler and former Soviet National Champion. White of San Diego is a Tae Kwon Do champion who has taken on some of the best martial artists in the world today. White is trained by well-known ultimate fighter, Ken Shamrock. In their first meeting in Baton Rouge, La. in September of 1997 Matyushenko completely dominated the fight and went on to win the IFC Heavyweight title. In a rematch in Montreal in October of 1999 White outfought Matyushenko to win a controversial split decision. This war in Montreal was considered by many fight fans to be one of the best fights ever. Up until that decision, which he still disputes, Matyushenko was undefeated. Still considered one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world, Matyushenko, with his "ground and pound’ style now seeks to revenge his sole loss against the confident and skillful White. Expect this fight to become another war of attrition between these two outstanding fighters. In the semi-main event "Big" Gan McGee puts his IFC World Super Heavyweight Championship belt on the line for the first time against North American Super Heavyweight Champion, "Bad" Brad Gabriel. McGee of San Luis Obispo, CA is another world class wrestler making a name for himself in the IFC. He is a former NCAA champion who stands 6’10’ and weighs in at 303 pounds. He is undefeated in IFC style fighting. Gan will both out weigh and out reach Canada’s "Bad" Brad Gabriel who is also undefeated. Brad is a former member of the Canadian National Tae Kwon Team and an undefeated kickboxer known for his power. Brad stands 6’1" and weighs in at 246 pounds. Exciting? You bet it is! This is the new fighting sport for the new millennium with kicks, punches, throws and submission holds. The IFC open style fighting events have generated huge interest among fight and martial arts fans and have rekindled interest in the age old question of which fighting discipline is the most effective and which individual is truly the greatest fighter in the world. When the cage door slams shut, there’s no where to run and no place to hide! IFC Battleground 2000 is promoted by D. Benjamin Brown Productions and is sanctioned by the New Jersey Athletic Control Board. The event will be broadcast around the world. Tickets begin at $25 and are on sale at all Ticketmaster outlets. It’s the IFC, it’s in Atlantic City and it’s real! Tickets go on sale on Monday August 21 at all Ticketmaster outlets or by calling 1-800-736-1420.
